Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art as well as theatre. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash in the house that belonged to a member of jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of school. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
